STEVEN- On the blue eye thing, I have brown eyes, like my dad's. Both my kids have greenish blue eyes exactly like my mom's. James is right though because sometimes eye color does change in their first year. How was the party? - 15:16:59 on 1 Nov 98 GMT
Melissa:Steven: How will you keep the druid from following the clan to your new site? I will be sad to see the site go. Even though I rarely have time to jump on, I've always thought of it as an anchor in my life. At least here I've been able to find rational conversation and interesting debates. When every other person in the world seems content in deluding themselves (and trying their damnedest to suck me into their delusion), I can just type in this address and sigh with relief as the comments pop up. I can rest assured that not every member of the human species is sick with this disease called "god". I wish there was a way to find out the druid's email address. I know there's a way flex.net could find out and block any more transmissions from its ipaddress. oh well. - 0:09:06 on 2 Nov 98 GMT
Melissa:Steven: just read old remarks about how you'll keep the spammer at bay. good idea. so you have a new addition to your family. How old? I just had one myself, now four months old. Aren't they the most wonderful things in the world? (even though they keep you up half the night and don't really ever let you have a moment to yourself). How are you going to raise him religious wise? That's something I've been wondering about lately. I thought of stocking our bookshelves with the sacred books of all the major religions as well as books on others and just letting him read them all and make up his own mind. But his father doesn't want any of those books in the house. He says he won't be ordering playboy or hustler and letting the kid read up on that smut and make up his own mind which he likes best or whether he likes it at all, so why should he expose the kid to the worst smut of all . . . the godthing? I don't know. On the one hand, I think knowledge is the best defense against religion, which does sprout from ignorance, but I don't think I'll be exposing him playboy etc. either (though what he does on his own time in his own room will be his own business in that regard.) What do you think? - 0:22:47 on 2 Nov 98 GMT
Marlene:MELISSA- We've contacted flex.net to try to get something done about it but they haven't answered back. I suppose it's really up to the page owner to take care of that type of thing and who knows where Ron is these days. I agree, I hate to see it deserted but I'm also really tired of the spam. If asked to what species of the genus humbug this article properly attaches itself, we should reply to the humbug philosophical. We have not time to analyze, but would say that the author introduces himself as in pursuit of an idea; this he chases from the wilderness of phrenology into that of transcendentalism, then into that of metaphysics generally; then through many weary pages into the open field of inductive philosophy, where he at last corners the poor thing, and then most unmercifully pokes it to death with a long stick. This idea he calls the "Perverse." - 7:22:42 on 5 Nov 98 GMT
Pam:To the controller, why not add more message boards to your site like this one. No hassle, right; it is free not only monetarily. There are rules for boards enforced by you but also a conformity of something. Life is not fair and it is true that the winner dies with the most toys when this conformity occurs. For to ask whether it is good to ask for influence. And whatever I may know about an object, I can still ask, quite pertinently, to be influenced with regard to my interest in it, a splayfoot of privacy raking. It will be said, I am aware, that when we persist in acts because we feel we should not persist in them, our conduct is but a modification of that which ordinarily springs from the combativeness of phrenology. But a glance will show the fallacy of this idea. The phrenological combativeness has for its essence, the necessity of self-defence. It is our safeguard against injury. Its principle regards our well-being; and thus the desire to be well is excited simultaneously with its development. It follows, that the desire to be well must be excited simultaneously with any principle which shall be merely a modification of combativeness, but in the case of that something which I term perverseness, the desire to be well is not only not aroused, but a strongly antagonistical sentiment exists. - 7:45:46 on 5 Nov 98 GMT
It is quite a common thing to be thus annoyed with the ringing in our ears, or rather in our memories, of the burthen of some ordinary song, or some unimpressive snatches from an opera. Nor will we be the less tormented if the song in itself be good, or the opera air meritorious. In this manner, at last, I would perpetually catch myself pondering upon my security, and repeating, in a low undertone, the phrase, "I am safe." - 7:52:17 on 5 Nov 98 GMT

(G)rant:PAM-- You need to get out more; outside of yourself, that is. Just an opinion mind you. Communication doesn't appear to be among your motivations. Are you unwilling to respond directly to anyone? Shall I expect fragments of this post to appear scattered through stream-of-conciousness posts for a while? Speak your thoughts. If they can't abide scrutiny perhaps they should be held up to the light, rather than scrutiny itself. Too much internalizing may or may not be in one's own interest but it sure can make one appear dull, and isolated from real life. Do you never wonder what specifically others think or feel? Are you never tempted to ask a question? To compare notes? To directly challenge a statement you feel to be in error? Have you ever considered offering something in the social marketplace that has a demand? - 13:38:10 on 5 Nov 98 GMT

I. Amino Acids A. Amino acids have common structural features. 1. All amino acids have a carboxyl group and an amino group bonded to the same carbon atom (the a -carbon). 2. For all amino acids except glycine, the a -carbon is a chiral center; there are two configurations of each chiral center, enantiomers, which are nonsuperimposable mirror images. 3. All molecules with a chiral center are optically active; they can rotate plane-polarized light, with the direction of the rotation different for different stereoisomers. 4. The classification of stereoisomers is based on the absolute configuration of the 4 substituents in comparison to a standard compound, glyceraldehyde. B. Proteins contain L-amino acids. C. Amino acids are ionized in aqueous solutions ( zwitterions). D. Amino acids can be classified by R groups: nonpolar and aliphatic; aromatic; polar but uncharged; negatively charged and positively charged; know the structures of amino acids from Fig. 5-6. 1. Aromatic amino acids absorb UV light; review Beer-Lambert law in textbook. 2. Cysteine is readily oxidized to form a covalently linked dimeric amino acid cystine, in which the two cysteine molecules are joined by a disulfide bridge. E. Cells also contain at least 300 nonstandard amino acids:, e.g. 4-hydroxyproline, 5-hydroxylysine, 6-N-methyllysine, g -carboxylglutamate; desmosine; selenocysteine. F. Zwitterionic amino acids can act as acids and as bases -- termed amphoteric or ampholytes. G. Amino acids have characteristic titration curves. 1. Glycine -- pKa values of 2.34 for the carboxyl group (vs. 4.76 for acetic acid) and 9.6 for the amino group; 2 regions of buffering power H. The titration curve predicts the electric charge of amino acids. 1. The isoelectric point (pI) is the pH at which the amino acid has no net charge. 2. For glycine, the pI = 1/2(pK1 + pK2) = 1/2(2.34 + 9.6) = 5.97. 3. Glycine will have a net negative charge at any pH above the pI and in an electric field will migrate toward the anode (+ electrode). 4. Glycine will have a net positive charge at any pH below the pI and in an electric field will migrate toward the cathode (- electrode). I. Amino acids differ in their acid-base properties. 1. All amino acids with an R group that doesn't ionize have titration curves very similar to that for glycine. 2. Amino acids with an ionizable R group have titration curves with 3 stages, with the 3rd stage (corresponding to the R group) merging to some extent with the two for glycine. 3. Glutamate has a pI of 3.22, the average value of the pKa values for the 2 carboxyl groups, where there is a net negative charge of -1 which balances the +1 contributed by the amino group. 4. Histidine has a pI of 7.59, the average value of the pKa values for the 2 positively charged groups, where there is a net positive charge of +1 which balances the -1 charge contributed by the carboxyl group. 5. Only histidine has a pKa value near physiological pH values and is thus the only amino acid to provide physiological buffering power; however, the pKa value of amino acids can be altered when buried inside a folded protein. J. Ion-exchange chromatography (conventional or HPLC, high performance liquid chromatography) separates amino acids by electric charge. K. Amino acids undergo characteristic chemical reactions. 1. Some chemical reactions greatly simplify the detection, measurement and identification of amino acids. a. Ninhydrin, when heated with amino acids, yields a purple product (proline, yellow product). b. Other reagents (1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrobenzene, fluorescamine, dansyl or dabsyl chloride) yield colored or fluorescent derivatives which are specific for each amino acid. II. Peptides A. Peptides are chains of amino acids, joined through a substituted amide linkage. 1. This peptide bond is formed by removal of the elements of water from the a -carboxyl group of one amino acid and the a -amino group of another amino acid. 2. Peptide bond formation costs energy -- is endergonic. 3. Amino acid units within a peptide are termed residues. 4. By convention, peptide sequences are given from the amino-terminal residue on the left to the carboxyl-terminal residue on the right. B. Peptides can be distinguished by their ionization behavior. C. Peptides undergo characteristic chemical reactions. 1. Peptides undergo reactions at the free amino and carboxyl groups and at the R groups. 2. Peptides can be hydrolyzed by boiling in strong acid or base to yield the constituent amino acids; can label the N-terminal residue before hydrolysis 3. Peptide bonds can be cleaved specifically by proteolytic enzymes. D. Some small polypeptides have biological activity. - 19:01:48 on 5 Nov 98 GMT

AdamINO:I am a fan of aminos myself. Of course, I wouldn't flood the page with such stuff. Alas, the poor mental faculties of Robert T. Wee, who likens proof of god with proof of one's own exostence. Of course, the fact that we exist is provable—indeed, self-evident—except in the context of some ridiculous existential fog-argument (e.g. how do know this isn't all a dream?"). When you purport to subscribe to mythology, you will engage in the most convoluted mental machinations to avoid the simple fact that you have---and cannot obtain---even the faintest shred of direct evidence of the subject of your mysbelief. All that you cannot explain in your feeble, daily-existence terms must be the realm of "god," giving you a handy catch-all warm & fuzzy explanation for all you cannot figure out. Not long ago, the most developed societies believed all the planets to be gods and lighting their expressions of anger. How absurd, you say? Not at all---it was tthe catch-all "god" answer to questions too big to answer with state-of-the-art reason. Now we know what the planets are, and what lightning is, so they have crossed into the realm of reason. Of course, there's still much of which we know not, and the mental primitives will continue to attribute this ever-shrinking list to "god"---the only explanation for the feebleminded. This, of course, as aside from the practice of organized religions to DENY things that are long explained by science because they challange "the word" written by men thousands of years back. The fact that religion deliberately retard human intellectual progress is a story BESIDE my assertion in this post---theists lack of a rational proof of "god" is a paltry cover, to those of us with the superiority to devote ourselves to simple reason, for your "god"'s lack of existence. SHow me your god, that I may smite his lilliy-livered weasely chicken-shit ass. Some god you have! Can't even deal with me. - 3:12:56 on 7 Nov 98 GMT

I had run until I thought my lungs would burst. Frozen grass crunched under my feet. Another howl sounded, closer than the first. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it would leap into my throat and choke me. Could a person die that way? I did not know, but could imagine. I was always imagining. The ground lifted, the ridge rose before me, black against black. Miraculously my feet found the way without stumbling over a stone and pitching me headlong. The trees swallowed me. But even then I was not safe, I had to get to the grove of the oaks, the sacred grove. I pushed through a tangle of undergrowth, holding an up-flung arm in front of my face to protect it. My harsh breathing was so loud the wolves could have tracked me by the sound alone. A stich of pain tore through my side like a bolt of lightning. Perhaps it was lightning. Perhaps I had been struck dead and would not run anymore. Then the pain ebbed and I struggled on, tripping over roots, sobbing for breath, trying to hear if the wolves were behind me. - 6:54:25 on 7 Nov 98 GMT
The undergrowth thinned; I was on the last steep rise leading to the grove of ancient oak trees. I gave a gasp of relief. Next moment I stumbled and fell forward into a hollow filled with dead leaves. The leaves closed over me. I lay panting, listening for the patter of the feet. Nothing. Only the thunder of my blood in my ears. I dared to hope the wolves had not been after me, at all, but on the trail of some smaller, easier game. When it seemed I might be safe, I settled deeper into the bed of dry leaves. It was as good a place as any, and warmer than most. I could wait in relative comfort until dawn, knowing I was well concealed at the very edge of the grove. The druids would come with the dawn. Then I heard singing and the night was over. They must have come right past me on their way to the grove. Cautiously I crept forward, trying to get closer to the clearing in the center of the grove where the most powerful of the druid rituals took place. An immense holly bush barred my way. It stood at the very edge of the glade; if I could get inside it I could see without being seen. Or so I thought. - 7:08:11 on 7 Nov 98 GMT

Thorn is the third rune in what is believed to be a group of 33. That part is only speculation due to the different beliefs through the years. But, it is speculated as the third rune. Thorn is also known as Thurisaz, pronounced thu-ri-saz. Thu...ri, like rig...saz with "a" as in father. The base meaning to this is "Gateway, with thorns of resistance." It also has been known as Dorn, you can see there are many synonyms for this rune. Thorns can be looked upon in two ways, as a barrier and as a protection or a separator from the "other side" of change. So, there is good and bad in thorn. In accordance to that, thorn is a rune of testing and challenge, as well as protection and defense. To simplify this, I'll try to state it like this. Its Divinatory meaning is: Hardship, painful event, etc. Obviously, this fits Michael to a "t." Its magical uses are to aid in study and meditation and self meditation. I find this amazing because Michael had TOTAL self control and meditation. After researching, all of this is finally coming together. To understand thorn, you must realize all that's behind it. So, it helps to understand where it falls on the tonal axis. It spans from the fourteen (Earthly father), through the four (the place of the Animals...possibly explaining his eating of the dog in the first Halloween),the ten (the mind), the three, the thirteen, and the one. The one is the place of Fire. Obviously the fire explains the RAGE in Michael Myers. Some of the potential negative trends are Demonic Influence, damage, deception, and perishing of enemies. Well, looky what we have here! All of those explain Michael Myers. To help understand Thorn, here is the POEM that goes hand in hand with thorn: A third song I know: If urgency tells me to tie the opponent w/magic Then I dullen the steel of my foes So that their swords will not cut anymore. This poem can explain Michael's influence of thorn. They believed a person was inflicted with this curse so that they could spare the lives of all other people in that "tribe." Here is something you will find AMAZING! Under Christian proselytizing influence, the Latin alphabet was generally adopted, and only two runes survived: the wynn (yes, you read correctly, the WYNN), which looked a lot like a P, and the thorn, which looked like a "p" with a neck splint. Isn't that amazing, that WYNN was one of the runes that survived? Could this explain the fascination that Dr. Wynn has with Michael's powers? Maybe this led to his name of "Wynn!" Weird Stuff. Lastly, I'll leave you with something that could possibly be used for HALLOWEEN 7. The lesson of this rune is to learn you must suffer. Not only literal suffering, but also in the biblical sense of allowing one's destiny to unfold as it should, and allowing one's self to experience all that life offers us. There is talk of "Giants" when talking of Thorn. Thorn is the name given to the Giant. The Giants (not the football team or the baseball team) may seem to be evil and destructive to the Aesir, but they bring about change, and eventually clear the way for a new age. Could Michael finally turn out to be "not as bad as he appears?" After he does "his job" maybe he'd clear up. I'll leave you guys with that last thought. Hope some of this gives you a better understanding on H6. I know this info surprised me a lot and helped me understand H6. I really loved the WYNN part. Thorn isn't just an evil rune. It can be both good and evil. Depending on which way the rune is set, can determine whether it's good or evil. This depends on which way the triangle part of the thorn symbol is facing. You see, it can also play a part in taking the evil OUT of the person cursed with it. This also goes along with what I said they could possibly do at the END of h20 How it can bring about that change it's seeking. You never know, something could trigger Michael to let the evil out of him, that protective rune, perhaps? Anyhow, I also thought I'd let everyone know how the thorn rune can also double the size of any animal for the duration of the spell. A doubling in this size would increase the weight by four times. With this, a gain of 50% over the "creature's" natural strength is probable as well. Could this explain why Michael is not affected by bullets or anything else? Can this explain why he got so BIG between parts 5 and 6? Discounting the fact that George Wilbur put on weight, could this be the explanation? The whole time that Wynn had Michael locked away (the six years) could this curse be building up in Michael? Thus, making him so much BIGGER and STRONGER than ever? I think this seems too coincidental not to be looked at! Look at the great storyline this presents. This finally could explain why Michael can't be killed. He gained all that strength over the years. Once that curse is lifted by that protective rune, I feel Myers would slowly lose all that power and bulk, returning him to a "normal" individual. - 20:43:41 on 8 Nov 98 GMT

Marlene:CARL - Actually I'm pissed off, LOL! It's near blizzard conditions here where I live and I have to go to work this afternoon, a half hour drive from here. My car broke down on Sunday and I'll have to take the little truck which has no traction on slippery roads, ugh! Otherwise I'm just fine! I've been reading all the articles on the American Atheist site. Have you read them? - 18:21:39 on 10 Nov 98 GMT
Carl:MARLENE: The American Atheist site, maybe I can't say, I just wander about peeking in on this then that, I have no order to follow. Altho'on one site someone posted an all collective site on the "Josephus" who wrote the reference xtian's say affirm's the historical jc thing. Would you like to see it? - 18:53:17 on 10 Nov 98 GMT

Adam HOWDY HO!:Ah, denizens returning to home turf! Splendid! How are things over at the threadbare? Are the colors still garish? On a serious note, I would like to point out that although religious authorities consistently disclaim any advocacy of the sort of anti-abortion violence that has occurred in upstate New York and Canada, these deaths nonetheless must be chalked up to religion in general—as I often point out, the leading cause of homicide in human history and currently. You can't on one hand preach that abortion is mass murder and on the other denounce violence by followers seeking to prevent such mass murder. In fact, within the bounds of the forfeiture of reason known as religious belief, a believer who resorts to violence to prevent abortion actually is behaving quite rationally under his or her belief structure. Query: what would be the level of terrorism in a world without any religion? Welcome back, folks. - 19:41:26 on 10 Nov 98 GMT
Carl:MARLENE; here it is, I just listed it as a favorite a few hours ago. I've seen some of this before but not a site with such wide collection of stuff to cross check and such, or so I now think it may hold. Enjoy, - 19:43:45 on 10 Nov 98 GMT
Carl:ADAM: have you checked out "Why Christians Suck" yet? They've restructered it some and seem to have picked up a few new or different articles. I am pretty sure I saw a site where the catholic controllers are "now" accepting a responsibility for the iquisition, they won't sluff off the deeds to the gov't as before. Awful brave o'them, wonder where they plan on going with that action? - 19:50:11 on 10 Nov 98 GMT

Marlene:ADAM- I agree. It is the responsibility of the church now to teach their masses that it is WRONG to kill. I was reading the American Atheist site. There is an article in their what many churches are doing on Halloween night is presenting their own type of horror called Hell Night. They show pictures of abortions, homosexual men dying of AIDS and a bunch of other shit. This is terrible! Trust a damn xtian to take the fun out of Spook Night! CARL- Thanks, I'll check it out! ADAM, I mean...: Marlene: I have seen news reports on the hell nights. Boo. As for church teachings, I would suggest to you that the church cannot in good conscience preach antiviolence. That is, if you accept that "god" has ordained life to be sacred from conception—which the major religions seem to (discounting for now the religious splinter groups that disagree with the main religion on fundamental matters like abortion, but then assininely insist on remaining PART of the main religion, even though they are not welcome)—you necessarily MUST condone violence to prevent abortion. IOW, don't we all agree that there is a moral imperative to prevent the destruction of innocent life if we are capable of doing so without undue risk to ourselves or innocent others? If you can safely prevent the assault upon an innocent old lady or child on the street, even if that means using force against the attacker (this is hypo; please disregard the likelihood of such a scenario) must you not act? I say yes. Therefore, if you accept that a fetus is an innocent life rising to the same life interest as a born person, then you necessarily are morally obliged even to use force (if perhaps not deadly force) to stop an abortion. My argument is not what the church should say about violent antiabortion acts; I suggest that given the fundamental assumption of the sanctity of the fetus, the church necessarily is in a quandary regarding such teachings———if a fetus is an innocent life interest, you must act to stop abortion, and substantial force necessarily is justified. Don't you guys miss me on the ugly page? - 20:45:25 on 10 Nov 98 GMT

Linda: So what's this place like? Ash: Well it's a little run-down... but, uh, it's right up in the mountains.Linda: Are you sure it's deserted? Ash: Oh yeah... I think so.Linda: (giggle) [Nighttime - In the cabin] Ash: Whoa.Linda: (giggle) Ow. Ash: So what do you think kid?Linda: I love it Ash. Linda: I feel funny about being here. What if the people who own the place come home? Ash: They're not gonna come back. Even if they do we'll tell them the car broke down or something like that. Linda: With your car, they'd believe it. Ash: Hey, what do you say we have some champagne hey baby?Linda: Sure. Ash: After all, I'm a man and you're a woman, at least last time I checked. Linda: Ok. Ash: Hey! There's a- There's a tape recorder here. Linda: See what's on it. Prof: (On tape) This is Professor Raymond Knowby, Department of Ancient History, log entry number two. I believe I have made a significant find in the Castle of Candar. Having journeyed there with my wife Henrietta, my daughter Annie and Associate Professor Ed Getly. It was in the rear chamber of the castle that we stumbled upon something remarkable. Morturom Demonto, the "Book of the Dead". My wife and I brought the book to this cabin where I could study it undisturbed. It was here that I began the translations. The book speaks of a spiritual presence. A thing of evil that roams the forests and the dark bowers of man's domain. It is through the recitation of the book's passages that this dark spirit is given license to possess the living. Included here are the phonetic pronunciations of those passages. "Cunda astratta montose eargrets gutt nos veratoos canda amantos canda". Ash: Linda? Hey Lind- [Outside the cabin]Ash: Linda!?! Linda... [Daytime - At the cabin] Ash: It's gone. The sun's driven it away. Yeah. For now. Gotta... Gotta blow out of here for now... EvlFrc: Join us. Ash: Ah. Oh. Oh God. No. Oh no. No... no... No!!!! Gotta, I gotta get a grip on myself here. [Nighttime - At a small airport]Annie: (to crewer) Thank you. Ed: Annie!Annie: Hi!Ed: How'd the expedition go? Annie: Great. I found the pages of the "Book of the Dead". Ed: Yeah, I got your telegram. Thanks. So what condition are they in? Annie: Take a look.Ed: They haven't aged a day in 3000 years. Annie: Maybe longer.Ed: When do we begin the translations? Annie: Tonight. Is everything all set with my father? Ed: Well, it should be but I haven't spoken with him in a week. There's no phone in the cabin. We'll take my car, it'll take us about an hour to get there. Annie you hinted in your telegram that your father was onto something in the first part of his translations. What has he found in the Book of the Dead? Annie: Probably nothing. But just possibly, a doorway to another world? [Nighttime - In the cabin] PosLin: Dance with me. (cackling)Ash: Ahhhhhh Ehhh... yeah, just a- PosLin: Hello lover. Ash: Workshed. [In the workshed] PosLin: Even now we have your darling Linda's soul. She suffers in torment. Ash: You're going down. Chainsaw. Linda: Please Ash... please don't hurt me. You swore- you swore that we'd always be together. I love you.Ash: Nooo! PosLin: Yah! Your lover is mine and now she burns in Hell. Ash: Oh yeah, alright... Ok. [In the cabin] Ash: I'm fine... I'm fine. MirAsh: I don't think so. We just cut up our girlfriend with a chainsaw. Does that sound fine? (chuckle) Ash: You bastards! You dirty bastards! Give me back my hand! Give me back my haaaaand!! [On a country road at the wrecked bridge] Annie: Excuse me. Excuse me. Is this the road to the Knowby cabin? Jake: That's right. And you ain't going there.Annie: And why not? Annie: There must be another way in. There's gotta be another road or something. BobJoe: Sure ain't no road. Why the hell do you want to go up there for anyway? Huh?Annie: None of your business. Jake: (clap) Hey! I just remembered. Why, yeah... that's right. There is a trail. You could uh, follow Bobby Joe and me. Ed: Sounds alright to me.Jake: But it'll cost ya.Annie: How much? Jake: Forty fi- (nudge from Bobby Joe) Hundred buck. Annie: Tell ya what, you take my bags and you got a deal. Jake: Sure. (dorky laugh)Annie: Heh heh. [In the cabin] Ash: Ah. Ah. That's right. Who's laughing now? Who's laughing now? Yahhhh! Ahhhh! [On the trail to the cabin] Jake: Jesus H. Christ... thought all she was talking about were those two Goddamn little bags. [In the cabin] Ash: Here's your new home. (BOOM) Aha!! Son of a- Arrgh! (BOOM) (BOOM) Gotcha didn't I you little sucker?! Old double barrel here... blow your butts to kingdom come. See if we don't... Jake: You little bastard! You gonna be all right honey? BobJoe: I-I don't know. I-I think so. Jake: You just sit still for a minute. You know this son of a bitch? Ed: No we thought her father was going to be here. That's why we decided-Annie: Oh my God! Where are my parents? What the hell did you do to them? What the hell did you do to them?Ed: Annie, come here. Annie, come here... come here. Jake: We'll throw him in there. Crazy buck's gone blood seeking. Ash: Wait. I made a mistake. Wait. Wait. Wait. I made a mistake. Jake: Damn right. Blackmail son of a bitch. BobJoe: I hope you rot down there. [In the cabin]BobJoe: Oh shit! Jake: I know it hurts baby, but everything's gonna be fine. Now in about five minutes I'm gonna go fetch the sheriff and bring him- Ed: Checked all the other rooms. Folks aren't here. Maybe they never came.Annie: But these are my father's things. Prof: (On tape) It's only been a few hours since I've translated and spoken aloud the first of the demon resurrection passages from the "Book of the Dead". Annie: Shhh... Listen up. This is my father's voice. Prof: (On tape) And now I fear that my wife has become host to a Candarian Demon. May God forgive me for what I have unleashed unto this earth. Last night Henrietta tried to... kill me. Annie: No! Prof: (On tape) It's now October 1st, 4:33 PM. Henrietta is dead. I could not bring myself to dismember her corpse. But I dragged her down the steps... and I buried her. I buried her in the cellar. God help me, I buried her in the earthen floor of the fruit cellar. Ash: Wahhhhhhhhhh!Jake: What the hell was that? Ed: Somebody's down there with him.Annie: No, can't be. BobJoe: Let's get the fuck out of here. PosHen: Someone's in my fruit cellar. Someone with a fresh soul! Ash: Ah! Ah! Let me out! There's something down here! Ah! Annie: Let him out!Jake: It's a trick, I know it!Annie: Let him out!! Ash: Move it! Open those chains up!PosHen: Come to me. Ash: Ah! Help! Help! Help me!PosHen: Come to sweet Henrietta. Hahaha. Annie: Hurry!Ash: Help! Help me please!PosHen: I'll swallow your soul. BobJoe: Do something! [In the cabin] Ash: There's something out there. That... that witch in the cellar is only part of it. It lives... out in those woods, in the dark... something... something that's come back from the dead. BobJoe: Plee! Please let's just get the hell out of here! Jake: We're going baby. We're going to get on that trail- Ash: Nobody's going out that door, not till daylight. Jake: Now you listen to me- Hnrita: (singing) Hush little baby don't say a word, Mama's going to by you a mocking bird. If that mocking bird don't sing, Mama's going to buy you a diamond ring. If that diamond ring turns brass, Mama's going to buy you a looking glass. Hnrita: Remember that song Annie? I used to sing it to you when you were a baby.Annie: Mother?Hnrita: Unlock these chains. Quickly! Annie: No. Hnrita: You were born September 2nd, 1962. I remember it well because it was snowing. So strange it would be snowing in September. Annie: That thing in the cellar is not my mother. PosEd: We are the things that were and shall be again. Hahahahha. ?Steps? of the Book. We want what is yours. Life! Ha ha ha ha! Dead by dawn. Dead by dawn.PosHen: Dead by dawn. Dead by dawn. PosEd: Dead by dawn. Dead by dawn.PosHen: Dead by dawn.PosEd: Dead by dawn. PosHen: Let me out.Jake: Thirsty son of a bitch. Annie: Where're you going? Help us you filthy coward! PosHen: Quickly. Set me free. PosHen: We live! We live still! [Still Nighttime - Still in the cabin]Jake: That's funny.BobJoe: What. Jake: That trail we came in here on? It just ain't there no more. Like, like the woods just swallowed her up.Annie: It's so quiet. Jake: What the hell was that? Ash: Maybe something trying to force its way into our world. BobJoe: It's in there. Ash: We'll all go in together. Jake: Hell no. You're the curious one.Annie: Hey. I'll go with you. [In the other room] Jake: Shit. I told you there weren't nothing in here no how. Jake: Holy Mother o' Mercy.Annie: Father? Spirit: Annie. There is a dark spirit here that wants to destroy you. Your salvation lies there. In the pages of the book. Recite the passages. Dispel the Evil. Save my soul. And your own lives! BobJoe: Jake. You're holding my hand too tight. Jake: Baby, I ain't holding your hand. Jake: Hey? Where's Bobby Joe? [In the cabin] Jake: Hey? Where the hell is she? We gotta go out there and find her. Ash: If she went out in those woods, you can forget about her. Annie: What's wrong?Ash: Felt like someone just walked over my grave. What's that picture? What is that? Annie: In 1300 AD they called this man the, ah, hero from the sky. He was prophesied to have destroyed the Evil. Ash: Didn't do a very good job... Can you find it? Annie: Here it is, two passages. Recitation of this first passage will make this dark spirit manifest itself in the flesh. Ash: Why the hell would we want to do that? Annie: Recitation of this second passage creates a kind of rift in time and space. And the physical manifestation of this dark spirit can be forced back into the rift. At least that's the best translation that I can- (shotgun reloading) Jake: Uh-huh. That's right. I'm running the show now. We're going to go out there in them woods and look for Bobby Joe. Once we find her we're getting the hell out of here. Ash: No you idiot! You'll kill us all. She's dead by now. Don't you understand? With these pages, at least we have a chance. Jake: Bunch of mumbo jumbo bullshit. These pages don't mean squat. Besides, now you ain't got no choice. Now move! [Outside the cabin]Jake: Move.Ash: Look. You're nuts. Jake: I said move!Annie: No! You stupid fool! Jake: I'll blow your fucken head off.Ash: Hey. No trail. Where to now? Jake: Bobby Joe! Bobby Joe!! Bobby Joe!!! Ash: You'll get us all killed!Jake: Shut up!Annie: Leave him alone! Jake: Get outta here- Bobby Joe!!!! Bobby - Joe!!!!! Bobby Joe... Where are you, girl? PosAsh: You're next. Annie! [Inside the cabin] Annie: No... no... Jake: Ahhhh! Annie: I'm sorry! Jake: Get me another room. Get the ax. We'll kill it when it comes back. But first, pull this damn thing out of me! Jake: Ahhh! I can't breathe, I can't breathe. Hurry! Annie: I'm trying! I'm trying!Jake: Ahhhh! Annie: Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Jake: Check outside the windows. Check the windows, he's probably right out- Ahhh! Help me! Annie: Oh God! Ahhhhh! PosAsh: Ahhhhh!! Waahahaha! Ash: No! No wait! Listen to me! I'm all right now. That thing is gone! Damn it! I said I was all right! Are you listening to me? You hear what I'm saying? I'm all right! I'm all right. Annie: OK, maybe you are. But for how long? If we're going to beat this thing, we need those pages. Ash: Then let's head down into that cellar and carve ourselves a witch. PosHen: (cackling) Hahahaha. [In the workshed] Ash: Groovy. [In the cabin]Ash: Those pages are down there somewhere. Annie: "Nos veratos alamemnon conda." Ash: (whistles) Let's go. PosHen: I'll swallow your soul. I'll swallow your soul. Annie: (singing) Hush little baby don't say a word, Mama's going to buy you a mock- mocking bird. PosHen: Hey! I'll swallow your soul! I'll swallow your soul! I'll swallow your soul!Ash: Swallow this. (BOOM) Ash: G- Annie: I only completed the first of the passages and that was to make the Evil a thing of the flesh!Ash: Finish it! Annie: There's still the second passage. The one- the one to open the rift and send the Evil back!Ash: Well start reciting it! Now! Ash: Don't look Annie! Finish the passages! Get rid of it! Ash: No!!! EvlTre: We've won. We've won. Victory is ours. Ash: You did it kid. By God- No!!!! Ahhhhh!! For God's sake! How do you stop it? [Late Medieval England]Man: Slay the beast. It is a deadite! Man: Run! Back to the castle! (BOOM) Knight: Hail he who has come from the skies to deliver us from the terrors of the deadites!Crowd: Hail! Hail! Hail! Ash: No! No! No!! No!!! No!!!! No!!!! The Druids emerged from the ancient Celtic tribes, at a time when the people had to live close to nature to survive. By the light of the storyteller's fire, and with the play of the harp, the Druids dreamed magic for their people. In the deep woods they would gather, bringing together their mysticism and philosophy, their insight and learning. Their spirit emerged from the the tides of the sea, the light of the sun, the wind in the Oak, the cry of the deer. In this way, they created an institution that inspired, frightened, and uplifted their world. The moon still dances for us now as she did then, and so the wonder of Nature remains as awesome as in those lost days. The Druids may be gone, but their magic is not. It may yet emerge from the earth again, if we remember her and love her again. - 2:50:39 on 11 Nov 98 GMT

"I fear my ignorance of country ways hath led me into a grave error," says Mr Tawnish, with a scarce perceptible shrug of the shoulders; "upon second thoughts I grant there is about a man who can put down one throat what should suffice for six, something great." There is not a great deal of this kind of dialogue, unfortunately, but the similarity of style to Vance's dialogue in the "Cugel" books is striking. - 3:44:32 on 11 Nov 98 GMT

Melissa:ADAM: you make a good point supporting the violent action of some anti-abortionists. I agree, if you come upon someone attacking an innocent, defenseless person and can stop the attack without harm to yourself, even if it means killing the perpetrator, you should do so. However, these militants rarely act when the "attack" is taking place (as far as I know). Let's say you know a certain person is a serial killer. You've seen him in the act of killing. Would it be legal, or right, to kill him when he's just walking down the street, minding his own business? Or walking into his office or cooking in his kitchen? Personally, I don't believe physical violence is ever right, except as self-defense against PHYSICAL violence (not PSYCHOLOGICAL), or to protect another person from an attack. So, if the person is not AT THE MOMENT attacking someone, it is not right to hurt or kill him. Simply report your knowledge to the proper authorities and let the legal system do its job. So, anti-abortionists bombing clinics and sniping doctors is wrong. Unfortunately, for them, abortion is not illegal, so reporting the "attackers" to police does them no good. But hey, they have their gods to report to, right? Also, if these anti-abortionists DID act during the "attack", they'd wind up killing the very innocent they are trying to protect, which is pretty damn stupid. So I guess, in my book, they're in a catch 22. - 6:06:10 on 12 Nov 98 GMT

Adam MEIN COMFORT:Maybe Mass Murder, Meliss?÷÷÷ Technically, you're making sense, but injecting law into the fray, which is interesting but clouds my point. I was not referring to legal justifications whatsoever—in fact, the majority common-law rule is an at-your-own-risk samaritanism - generally, there is no legal duty to help a drowning man, much less to intervene in an attack. I was speaking strictly of moral obligation (after all, in the absence of a church-state, all the church can offer is moral suasion against abortion. This is an important distinction, because it is in the realm of the law that the immediacy-of-the-harm factor comes into play. Morally, I see nothing wrong with killing a known murderer well after the act, although I acknowledge that this gets you into hot water with the law. Having made that point, I now progress in the course of debate in response to your post, regardless of my initial objection. Under major western religions' teachings, abortion is murder; ergo, one who conducts abortions as a matter of routine or profession is a mass murderer. Now, the analogous inquiry becomes evident: would it have been OK to assassinate Hitler when, say, he was presiding over the Berlin Olympic Games, or only when he was ordering the extermination of Jews? If you firmly believe abortion to be murder, then you necessarily must believe yourself justified to killing abortion practitioners at any time and place, to prevent an ongoing series of homicides (not legally speaking, of course). Moreover, your point about possible injury to the fetus weighs IN FAVOR of perpetrating violence away from the abortion clinic. I stand by my point—the church cannot consistently deem abortion to be murder while renouncing antiabortion violence; the two positions are logically inconsistent. - 20:28:51 on 12 Nov 98 GMT

PAPASAM:ADAM, MELISSA. Abortion, disregarding the legal issue, is a purely emotional subject. I don't think anyone takes it lightly. At its best, it is not a pleasant procedure. Women don't have an abortion for fun. If a woman feels, for any reason, that she doesn't want to give birth, it should be her decision. It is none of my business. It is not your business, or that of the pope. I do not believe in forcing a woman to have an abortion. I don't believe I have the right to tell a priest to castrate himself to ensure his celibacy. On the oher hand, if he wants to do so, in accordance with the 'Lord's" word that eunuchs will get special consideration in heaven, it is his privilege. My mantra is simple. MYOB. Mind your own business. I don't care who's sleeping with whom,or what kind of sexual activities they engage in. If a person is in a hospital, dying and in pain, and wants to hasten the end of his life, he should be able to do so. Who the hell am I to tell him otherwise? No one else has the right to decide for him. MYOB. The greatest push to take away personal rights comes from the religious element. Ours is a secular neation and it is up to us to see that it remains that way. The way to do it is to insist - MYOB, NOT MINE. - 1:35:09 on 13 Nov 98 GMT

Adam POPFLI ***: SAM: My discussion made no reference to any position on abortion rights; I merely state that the church's condemnation of antiabortion violence is logically inconsistent. Now that you bring it up, however, I will state that Roe v. Wade, which prevents states from banning or substantially restricting non-late-term abortions, is a horrendous ruling for any number of reasons (I can go on and on about that). I assume you are stating your own moral view of abortion rights, but I might quarrel with it if it is stated as a position on the law. One of the worst things about Roe was the court's finding a basis in the U.S. Constitution for preventing states from restricting abortion; I submit that there is no such constitutional basis, and that Roe should be overturned. If a state bans abortion outright, there is nothing in the Constitution to prevent it. Indeed, like the overwhelming majority of criminal law, the power to criminalize abortion should be that of the various state legislatures. If you want unrestricted abortion in your state, lobby your legislators accordingly, but you ought not have any power (other than to criticize) as to whether some other state bans abortion. All of this, keep in mind, is legal and constitutional analysis-based; my opinion on Roe (unlike almost eveyone else's) is not influenced by my personal opinion on abortion, which makes the analysis all the more valid. - 21:58:46 on 13 Nov 98 GMT
Adam with an EX POST FACTO POST: Sam-which?: Having said all that, I will chime in with my own political views to the extent of stating most definitively that I am in accord with what appears to be your doggedly libertarian outlook on things. - 22:01:31 on 13 Nov 98 GMT
PapaSam:ADAM. In my opinion, neither the federal government nor the individual states should pass any laws governing abortion. It is a purely a personal matter. I realize it is a different matter if someone causes a woman to abort against her will. In such a case I feel he should be charged with felonious assault with intent to kill and punished acording to the law for attempted murder (of the woman.) - 22:24:41 on 13 Nov 98 GMT
ADAM SHOULDA, COULDA?: SAMbuca: I just want to clarify; I wholeheartedly respect your opinion on what the government SHOULD (or should not) do, but I would take issue with you if you were suggesting that the government CAN'T pass laws on abortion. My conclusion with respect to the law is that, absent a constitutional amendment, a state HAS the POWER to ban abortion (currently, Roe prevents this, but I argue that Roe was an incorrect decision without constitutional support). Thus, if you believe that the government OUGHT NOT pass laws on abortion, you're free to vote and to petition your elected state representatives accordingly, as are your fellow voters who oppose abortion. Again, all this says nothing about my moral position regarding abortion; it's just law. - 22:44:24 on 13 Nov 98 GMT
Carl:ADAM: So, from your post I gather; it seems that the fed.institution now via R-v-W, are in effect doing what religious types want to do or gather to do, under the roof of a religion institution? So it is like a battle of the Greeks Titans? But for now, with secular support the gov't titan has the power of yea/nay? The religious titan, much to its chagrin does not have that power and, desires it very much? So its safe to say that the contest between these two very ancient titans, is done with the life of some few humans? The odd factor the random factor of the play, the human factor will do what it wants when it wants very much in despite of either. Do humans really want either? - 22:59:12 on 13 Nov 98 GMT

Melissa:ADAM: I thought I was speaking completely on moral grounds. Besides, Law is an extension of morality, it is meant to be, or so I thought. Law is supposed to stem from the idea that it is wrong to harm another person, and therefore is instituted to protect us from our attackers. I could make a case that a fetus could be seen as an attacker, harming the woman who carries it in some way or another (say imposing a financial burden that would make her - and itself - homeless; the emotional scars carrying a child creates if you decide to give it up for adoption, indeed the PHYSICAL scars it creates) and therefore makes it imperative that it not be allowed to gestate. But my case would be rather weak. Anyway, my point is you make an assumption about what is absolutely moral. I disagree with that assumption. You claim that a person is justified in killing a killer even if he's not in the process of killing at the time of his death. I don't agree with that. I don't think murder should be condoned in any shape or form. Self-defense, yes. Defense of someone BEING attacked, yes. Deciding its time to take out the guy while he's watching TV, no. This is WHY we institute laws, governments. To protect us, to objectively decide on fair punishment. It is why laws and government are NECESSARY, and why you cannot arbitrarily throw them out if you are going to discuss the interactions of members of a civilized society. And you MUST take that membership into consideration if you are to discuss morals. Now, if you want to talk about morals in a primitive society, where governments are NOT instituted to protect its members from one another, then sure, I can see how your distinction is valid. Concerning religions, xtianity esp., isn't one of the ten commandments thou shalt not kill? Laws and governments aside, isnt this where they get their morals? Not from you, but from their book, that tells them to turn the other cheek and let god judge? I don't recall the bible ever implying protection of the innocent. - 6:36:12 on 14 Nov 98 GMT
Melissa:ADAM: also on Roe v Wade. I don't know exactly what the ruling states or what part of the Constitution it alludes to to justify that ruling, but I would think that the whole part about the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" would constitute justification. If a fetus endangers a pregnant womans life, it is violating her right to life, if it confines her to some duty she does not wish to undertake, it is violating her right to liberty, if it makes her unhappy to be pregnant, if it would make her happy to terminate the pregnancy, it is her right to pursue avenues that would end in that termination. Maybe I'm way off base her, and I generally wouldn't justify abortion in those terms, but they'd seem to apply as Constitutional justification, no? - 6:42:34 on 14 Nov 98 GMT
Melissa:PAPASAM: I completely agree with you, MYOB. I am not against abortion. I do think, however, it is very irresponsible to use it as a form of birthcontrol, or to wait until the pregnancy is more than 8-10 weeks along to have one. I think, if you're going to have sex, you should know beforehand whether you're going to keep the child should one . . . occur. Matter of fact, I think 8 weeks is too long, but you can't safely have an abortion before this time. And by the age of 8 weeks, the fetus's heart can be heard, its brain is developing, it has arms legs, fingers toes, eyes, and its sexual organs are nearly completely developed. It is, IMO, a sad situation. You say women don't have an abortion for fun. I know this more than YOU ever could. No, it is not fun. It is humiliating, degrading, and it creates a depression so deep inside you there is no hope of it ever being expelled. Nor should there be. - 7:01:50 on 14 Nov 98 GMT
Melissa:ADAMAGAIN: My take on why its silly for religios persons to take offense at abortion is this: They believe in a soul. So, if a fetus is aborted, there is the possibility that the soul, if it IS meant to inhabit the earthly realm, to come back in another body. Now, some religious folk don't believe in reincarnation, but, so what, the spirit still lives on, yes? As for me, I don't believe in a soul, so it's harder for me to find justification for abortion. Because: every embryo is the potential for a unique human being; each abortion is the smooting of a potential unique life; there is no coming back; it's gone, never to be reclaimed; what a horror to have existed only for a few weeks, with the glories of life unfolding before you, only to be quickly dismembered, sucked through a straw, in a matter of minutes. Religions, on the other hand, offer a way back, a second chance. I think I could personally rest a little easier if I believed the fetus I aborted's soul inhabited the son I now have, or at least resided somewhere as some form of life, if not on this earth. - 7:16:34 on 14 Nov 98 GMT
PapaSam:ADAM. I am not a lawyer or a legal scholar, but I am aware of the constitutiional rights of the states to pass laws. The question here is whether the state should be able to pass laws banning abortion. I do not feel the state should have that right. On what basis does that right rest? If a woman takes the morning after pill should the state be able to tell her "You can't do that!" Should the state also be able to say that a man can't have a vasectomy or a woman have her tubes tied? They can in Afghanistan but who wants to live there. We are a secular nation. If any member of a religious faction wants to live by those rules, that's their business, not mine. But they sure don't have any right to force their rules on others. In short, what a person does with his or her body is strictly their business. As far as sexual activities go, the only legal restrictions should be sex with children and rape. - 7:19:07 on 14 Nov 98 GMT

Melissa:PS-- Sorry, I just found this interesting, and perhaps a little sad, and since we're on the subject of abortion: Did you know, that, if an ovum is fertilized too late, i.e., after it's travelled a ways down the fallopian tube, it will be spontaneously aborted. That's right, an embryo must be at a certain stage of development by the time it reaches the uterus before it will be allowed to attach to the uterine wall and develop into a fetus. So, how many potential lives have been wasted by the female body's own system just because the sperm got to the egg a little late. If only mom and dad had done it at 8 oclock instead of midnight, little johnny might have happened. I wonder if there are any religionuts out there who would get all huffy and puffy if they knew this. Maybe try and impose mandatory testing of every ovum menstruated to see if it was a fertilized egg, on its way to becoming life. - 7:24:54 on 14 Nov 98 GMT

Of the reading I've done, I've seen at least two writer/thinkers refer to other areas of the world where evidence of the early human forms have been found. Those areas are the gobi desert and areas of western north america. Do we dare hold in reserve that the focus of this investigation, the search for the early human, has been influenced by the church-type humans? Adam A-BORE-TION:OK, I don't have time now to respond to the myraid points of MelisSaMelisSam. I have to be selective here; trust that I do not duck any issues. Melissa: Indeed, I was stating my own moral views on killing killers, and I do very much disagree with you that killing is fundamentally unjustifiable except in immediate self-defense or defense of others. I did state, though, that non-defense killing would get you in trouble with the law. It goes without saying that there is great value in the rule of law and great harm in vigilantism and anarchy. If you must meld my moral stance and a legal one, I would say that I advocate CHANGES in the law to greatly expand the availability of capital punishment. Indeed, I think that the death penalty should be available---that does NOT mean implemented---for all classes of intentional violent felonies. Of course, I acknowledge that this is not the present state of the law, and that even though a revenge killing of a murderer is morally justifiable, it is not legal. And of course I'm offering no more than my own moral views; then again, I am the world's leading expert on the subject of "What I think." SAMoleons: As I said, I have many quarrels with Roe, including the fact that it froze the law in time to the technology available in 1973, and that it represented a detailed, national regime for the legality of abortion restrictions that was more akin to an elaborate statute (that is, the purview of Congress) rather than an interpretation of the law, which is the court's millieu. Let's focus on the part that WAS legal analysis, however: the court grounded restrictions on the ability of the states to restrict abortion in the "right of privacy." It is easy to point out that the constitution does not mention privacy, but that is an inadequate argument, IMHOP. The concept was first pronounced by the court in a case called Griswold v. Connecticut in the ’50s. The state banned all dissemination of information concerning contraception. Dr. Griswold deliberately violated the law by providing information on contraception to married couples, so as to test the law. The court held that when you shine a light at the bill of rights as if each amendment was one in a series of iron bars, you will cast a dark shadow----or "umbra"---behind each amendment. In those shadows are the conduct that those amendments clearly are meant to protect: free speech and the press in the umbra of the 1st Amendment; the right against self-incrimination in the umbra of the 5th; etc. The court held further that, just like the light-on-the-bars analogy, there are grey areas created between the umbras---the bill of rights' PENUMBRA---of harder-to-define but nonetheless protected by the overall scheme of the bill of rights. In this penumbra was born the right of privacy, gleaned from 4 or 5 different amendments that never mention privacy specifically. I prefer to use the "intelligent alien" analogy: if you could bring down a creature from another planet that was of comparable intelligence to humans but that had no concept of our political history, and showed him the bill of rights and asked for his opinion of it, he would say that it was drafted by people deathly afraid of governmental power who sought to guarantee certain individual liberties against government abuse. Hence, it might be fair to read a general right of privacy in the various threads of specific protections. Fine for Griswold---on one side, you had the doctor-patient relationship and the married couple's right to acquire information important to their marriage. On the other, ????, except the state seeking to enforce some socio-religious status quo. What could be a clearer example of the privacy of individuals vs. big brother enforcing no specific interest. Now, on to Roe. Roe extended the privacy doctrine to the abortion context, and THAT was the big error. In abortion, unlike the facts of Griswold, there is another interest that must be balanced against the woman's privacy and doctor-patient concerns, and that I alluded to cryptically in the title of an earlier post in this thread: the "POPFLI" of the fetus. - 19:15:55 on 16 Nov 98 GMT
Adam, CONCLUDING:Now, I will acknowledge that most foes of abortion, including legislators, are driven by religious teachings that life begins at conception, and thus abortion is murder. Regardless of their undelying motivation, however, if a law restricting---or banning---abortion does so in the name of placing a certain value on the POPFLI (potentially protectable future life interest---my own coinage, with a nonsequitir baseball reference) of the fetus, a court has no constitutional grounds to undue the balance struck by the legislature. That is, the right of privacy of Griswold is undiminished, but Roe adds the POPFLI---an entirely new consideration in the analysis. Unlike Griswold, the state would not be merely enforcing some ethical code, but could claim that it had determined the POPFLI to outweigh the privacy right in some or all circumstances. For this reason, Griswold and Roe are completely distinguishable. Now I stated earlier that my legal analysis of Roe—--essentially set forth here---has nothing to do with my opinion on abortion, and that makes it all the more legitimate. Most people agree with Roe if they are pro-choice, and denounce it if they're pro-life. All I have done is to point out that Roe is wrong for telling all the states that the constitution prevents them from balancing the right of privacy against the POPFLI. I have not stated how I personally would strike that balance. If you're pro-life, you assign the POPFLI a maximum value, and cannot even allow debate over the justifiability of abortion, except perhaps if the mother's life is threatened. Conversely, if you characterize the abortion decision---as do many pro-choicers---as NOTHING MORE than a woman's decision regarding her own body, then you have tilted the playing field just as much as the pro-lifers, in the opposite direction, and cannot accept debate over the relative value of the POPFLI, which you have assigned a minimum value or, at least, a value invariably less than the woman's privacy right. I do not criticize either extreme for holding its respective position---all are entitled to opinions. I merely state that this is precisely the sort of balancing that the state legislatures are supposed to undertake, under pressure from their constituents. If you want a nationwide abortion standard, you need either federal legislation or a constitutional amendment. It was improper for the court to encroach on the states however, by harmonizing Roe with Griswold. So abortion would be unrestricted in most states, and possibly banned in several. That's called the federal system---some states don't tax income, some do. Some states have "Megan's Laws"; some don't. If you don't like what your state lawmakers do, vote them the hell out. And I still haven't offered my position on abortion, specifically to distill the legal argument. - 19:39:17 on 16 Nov 98 GMT
Carl:ADAM; An interesting portrayal of the possibly so interested partys. If only we all had legal teaching, then unlike the religious adherents 'we' would not need lawyers, like the 'ra' types need a godthing. Except for the hurdle it is what or rather where would law procedure end up? Isn't it strange how the control of people comes to the point of who 'knows', be it law or some kind of religious authority? - 20:29:19 on 16 Nov 98 GMT
ADAM The law is an ASSCH:Calling all Carls******* You will not get any argument from me regarding the unnecessary complexity and esoteric nature of the law, most particularly the confounding procedural rules that make access to the courts---presumably, a basic right of citizenship---illusory for the layperson. I am litigating a matter in small-claims court in Manhattan at present, and I cannot convey to you how little help pro se parties get from anyone, and in NYC, a large corporate opponent will have counsel. In my case, Viacom elected to play hardball with the wrong mutha fucka over an $1100 claim, and I have beaten their counsel on two consecutive motions to dismiss for lack of jurisdiction. Without my legal education, ability to do some online research, and the benefit of being a real sonofabitch when I want to, they would have gotten the matter dismissed in city court, forcing the tiny claim into the US Court for the Southern District of New York, where the procedure is even more arcane and the process more costly and slow-moving. That is, I suggest that their scumbag sheister tactics would have made most plaintiffs simply give up, and that I find most distressing. As for constitutional law, the complexity arises from the extraordinary simplicity of the US Constitution, which lays out only the most general principles, leaving individual disputes to drive a wealth of judicial interpretation. Thus, it's one thing to say that no one shall be deprived of due process of law, but quite another to say how much and what type of process is due in a certain factual situation. I must take issue, also, with the analogy to church and law. Although I recognize the clubby keeper-of-knowledge similarity, there's a big difference: our law is man-made, based on evolving but ancient principles of what is just for society and individuals, whereas religion is grounded in a bunch of folk myths and superstition. Also, religion tries to hold the line on human intellectual progress, despite contrary evidence, to where it was thousands of years ago. The law moves sluggishly, to be sure, but eventually adapts (e.g the flurry of Net-related statutes we see now). - 21:56:03 on 16 Nov 98 GMT

PapaSam:ADAM. I still feel that no law should be passed by either the state or federal government banning abortion. It is a complicated as well as an emotional subject. An abortion after the first trimester is certainly different from using the morning after pill. Who but a religious fanatic could object to the morning after pill? Prevention is the best way to avoid unwanted pregnancies, yet the same fanatics oppose sex education, claiming it would encourage sexual activity among the young. Children are naturally curious about sex. Young boys get erections even before puberty and learn to masturbate very quickly, wihout the benefit of sex education. There is nothing dirty or obscene about sex. It is a natural and necessary function. It is obscene only in the eyes of religious fanatics who want o control every aspect of human life. - 4:43:26 on 17 Nov 98 GMT

- 20:34:57 on 17 Nov 98 GMT

Adam AS HIGH AS AN ELEPHANT'S I ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ:Marlene: Is your so-called Corny tall? How about abundant? I will say this: the ruler's truth cannot possibly yield any information on tall corn. Typically, that which we call a ruler rarely exceeds 24". Even a yardstick's truth falls short of tall corn. I would suggest to the wacky Truth Fairy that a good, locking tape measure would be in order. Then again, trigonometry's truth would work just peachy. I ask you: is the ruler's truth Nebraska or something? In field of dreams, Kevin Costner's dad thought Iowa was heaven. Is that your point? - 21:14:53 on 17 Nov 98 GMT

Well, if you're being chased by an invisible evil thing that sounds suspiciously like a motorcycle, the best thing you can do is go careening through the woods, triping over as many roots and tree stumps as possible. It is absolutely VITAL that you find a stagnant body of water to fall in. Continue running until you find a windmill or the foley artist runs out of gas. The proper means of dealing with a deadite is to stop running, (the shemps are just large puppets, and so have a hard time catching up), turn, and fire up the ol' chainsaw. Beware of animated hands. Wear eye protection. Alternate methods of disposal include: shotgun blasts, propeller blades, crushing them under large rocks, and setting fire to their face. Remember: light deadite and get away. Never hesitate to take a deadite on totally unarmed. Despite being undead and immune to most forms of physical damage, a right hook works surprisingly well on them. Remember to use all the moves you learned from watching late- night Stooge marathons. Watch out, because the deadites have watched the same movies. Always have a catch-phrase handy for difficult situations.*** Return to the Bruce Campbell Page - 22:19:20 on 17 Nov 98 GMT

Carl:OPEN: One of the foremost issues I've held dear, as the druidish like posts here exemplify, concerned the word "faith". I disliked and have always been uncomfortable with it being easily 'given to' religious connotations. I am reading "The Human Nature; A Marxian view" and encountered the word "FIDEISM". Upon looking up its definition, I became quite comfortable with what the religious mind does. I don't approve of their position, but I do see an account for their preferred ignorance; like the druidish thing here, that I now can see clearer. - 17:04:32 on 19 Nov 98 GMT

Melissa -- in response to Adam's comment on MMM2:As a matter of fact I did make that point here on this page. And concerning your assertion that non-violent Christians are hypocrites: Perhaps I misunderstood, but I recall you stating that you think it right to kill a known murderer or attacker to protect an innocent life. I do realize that your claim that they are hypocrites is based on your assumption that they also think it is right to protect an innocent life from attack with brute force if necessary, so killing an abortion doctor should be ok according to those morals. What I meant When I said "The non-violent Xtians may go against ADAM's morals, but do they really go against their own?", I was merely questioning your assumption of their morals. And I don't think I was wrong in saying they go against your morals, since you stated you believed an innocent life should be protected by any means possible (and I was being very general in that remark. I was not implying that you condone abortion clinic bombings or the murder of abortion doctors. You made it clear that you don't oppose abortion). So, was I wrong? They do go against your moral, i.e., one must protect an innocent life even if by violent means, if they consider the unborn to be an innocent life and oppose the protection of it by violent means. - 5:16:34 on 20 Nov 98 GMT

GOD, I FEEL GOOF TODAY::So you do not rebuke me, as Adam, my son RTL; and you do not demand overwhelming proof if my existence? For as you recognize me my existence is validated; and thus manifest, within your higher mind level of thoughts and conscience. Thank ME, someone see's my TRUTH's, and believes on ME. BAREly, BAREly, I say unto you, "Yea must keep my commandments." The one I most cherish is, "Thou shall worship no other ASS's before you." Also, as one of our brethren here has so wisely stated, MYOB (Mind Your Own Business); I might add that before the B came the A, and thou should thus MYOAss; for the Ass you save, may be your own! A close compliment, and second on my list of important commandants is, "Thou shall not kick thy brothers ASS, until you can first kick your OWN!" I'm not sure my son Adam has "bought into" this concept yet; maybe you will have a more intimate and faithful understanding RTL? I hope you will agree that the breaking of these two commandants has caused more suffering in the world than even I could have ever envisioned! Welcome, RTL! - 14:22:39 on 21 Nov 98 GMT

1. MY heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk, Or emptied some dull opiate to the drains One minute past, and Lethe-wards had sunk: 'Tis not through envy of thy happy lot, But being too happy in thine happiness,--- That thou, light-winged Dryad of the trees, In some melodious plot Of beechen green, and shadows numberless, Singest of summer in full-throated ease. 2. O, for a draught of vintage! that hath been Cool'd a long age in the deep-delved earth, Tasting of Flora and the country green, Dance, and Provencal song, and sunburnt mirth! O for a beaker full of the warm South, Full of the true, the blushful Hippocrene, With beaded bubbles winking at the brim, And purple-stained mouth; That I might drink, and leave the world unseen, And with thee fade away into the forest dim: 3. Fade far away, dissolve, and quite forget What thou among the leaves hast never known, The weariness, the fever, and the fret Here, where men sit and hear each other groan; Where palsy shakes a few, sad, last gray hairs, Where youth grows pale, and spectre-thin, and dies; Where but to think is to be full of sorrow And leaden-eyed despairs, Where Beauty cannot keep her lustrous eyes, Or new Love pine at them beyond to-morrow. 4. Away! away! for I will fly to thee, Not charioted by Bacchus and his pards, But on the viewless wings of Poesy, Though the dull brain perplexes and retards: Already with thee! tender is the night, And haply the Queen-Moon is on her throne, Cluster'd around by all her starry Fays; But here there is no light, Save what from heaven is with the breezes blown Through verdurous glooms and winding mossy ways. 5. I cannot see what flowers are at my feet, Nor what soft incense hangs upon the boughs, But, in embalmed darkness, guess each sweet Wherewith the seasonable month endows The grass, the thicket, and the fruit-tree wild; White hawthorn, and the pastoral eglantine; Fast fading violets cover'd up in leaves; And mid-May's eldest child, The coming musk-rose, full of dewy wine, The murmurous haunt of flies on summer eves. 6. Darkling I listen; and, for many a time I have been half in love with easeful Death, Call'd him soft names in many a mused rhyme, To take into the air my quiet breath; Now more than ever seems it rich to die, To cease upon the midnight with no pain, While thou art pouring forth thy soul abroad In such an ecstasy! Still wouldst thou sing, and I have ears in vain--- To thy high requiem become a sod. 7. Thou wast not born for death, immortal Bird! No hungry generations tread thee down; The voice I hear this passing night was heard In ancient days by emperor and clown: Perhaps the self-same song that found a path Through the sad heart of Ruth, when, sick for home, She stood in tears amid the alien corn; The same that oft-times hath Charm'd magic casements, opening on the foam Of perilous seas, in faery lands forlorn. 8. Forlorn! the very word is like a bell To toil me back from thee to my sole self! Adieu! the fancy cannot cheat so well As she is fam'd to do, deceiving elf. Adieu! adieu! thy plaintive anthem fades Past the near meadows, over the still stream, Up the hill-side; and now 'tis buried deep In the next valley-glades: Was it a vision, or a waking dream? Fled is that music:--(-)Do I wake or sleep? - 0:46:56 on 23 Nov 98 GMT

The story begins with a philosophical discussion about how science (especially phrenology) understands human beings. It is the narrator's contention that science develops a priori. One first decides on the basic needs of humankind, then ascribes to certain organs the role of satisfying those needs. The narrator thinks this is backwards: "It would have been wiser, it would have been safer to classify . . . upon the basis of what man usually or occasionally did, and was always occasionally doing, rather than upon the basis of what we took for granted the ??? intended him to do." - 17:24:45 on 23 Nov 98 GMT

Adam BACK w/ a HACK °°°°°:Howdy, all. I'm back after a long weekend serving as a NYC tour guide for my ex-from-Texas. Have not had a chance to retrocheck old posts. Also got myself a nice little upper respiratory inflammation. UGH - 21:34:57 on 23 Nov 98 GMT
Adam MATERIALITY:The road less raveled. Steven: I'm sorry, but I find the threaded discussion a most material flaw in the format. It takes an inordinate amount of time and effort to examine and then reply to one post at a time, plus all the back-button stuff, which goes to the very fabric of an open discussion page. O, what a tangled Web page! Darn it, I'd be the last one to needle the new page, but a stich in time saves mine sanity! - 21:47:33 on 23 Nov 98 GMT
Adam WHAT A HOSER! ¥¥¥:Please note that I did not resort to the bad punnage of "The new page just plain SOCKS!" I have a little bit of decorum, you know. - 21:50:12 on 23 Nov 98 GMT
Steven :ADAM <<>> I agree with you to a point. This format is easier on the eyes etc. etc. However, anything is better than having someone intentionally SPAM a site because they do not agree with the message board, or atheism. I would give anything to be able to admin this site, or anyone admin the site that was a regular poster. The way it is currently sucks, and I would rather deal with a threaded format and still discuss issues with regulars without having to scroll through thousands of lines of complete bullshit. Everyone that used to post here, posts on the threaded page, and posting and reading from MARLENE, JOETTE, CARL, GRANT, MELISSA etc. is where my enjoyment lies. If all of these people stopped posting I would find a different place to discuss things with a heavy heart. ADAM, although I don't agree with everything you say, I value your ideas and input (especially the schtuff about kicking gods ass, rofl!). Anyway, if you can tolerate a pain in the ass threaded message board then all of us would be more than happy if you visited occasionally. If RON or whomever gets off their ass and finally admin's this board then I would shut down MIMM2 in a heart beat. - 21:58:20 on 23 Nov 98 GMT

Carl:STEVEN\ADAM; While I for one can simply see the + points of the original man is... site, these virus type posters really ruin the good thing it is. Obviously "they" enjoy the disruption and annoyance of their doings, and if they are xtians or the druid thing, they may have the mentality to do "all" they can to ruin and prevent this group- that we are, from communing. Is it a thing of will power? - 23:09:30 on 23 Nov 98 GMT
PapaSam:ALL. Personally, I'll be damned if I let those spammming holy rollers kick me out of what I consider my site. They can suck jesus' ass and vice cersa all they like. The druids can talk to their oak trees all they like and the oak trees can talk back. The other wackos can whack each other off. No matter how much and how often those weirdos spam our site in honor of some deity it won't change the simple fact . "There ain't no such animal." - 3:49:10 on 24 Nov 98 GMT
- 6:03:06 on 24 Nov 98 GMT

(s)pammers :The Druids emerged from the ancient Celtic tribes, at a time when the people had to live close to nature to survive. Remember your failure at the cave:INT. CASTLE COURTYARD - NIGHT 624 ASH (V.O.) Peace was made between the two peoples. And a new nation was formed. They offered me a chance to stay among them and teach them. A chance to lead them. To be King. But Sheila was gone. Besides, I had places to go. FLAMES OF THE FIRE - CAMERA PULLS BACK TO REVEAL... 625 THE WISEMEN 625 mix a vat of liquid over a fire as they recite a passage from the Necronomicon. A flask is dipped into the liquid. WISEMAN JOHN hands the flask of liquid to Ash. WISEMAN JOHN The Book tells us that each drop allows a man to sleep a century. Swallow six drops, and thou shalt awaken in thine own time. ASH (V.O.) Yeah. Right... Ash takes the flask and studies it. ...but what other choice did I have? DISSOLVE TO: 626 EXT. CASTLE - LONG SHOT - DAY 626 ASH rides off. ASH (V.O.) I had to find a place to crash. For a very long time. 627 EXT. CAVE - DAY 627 ASH with the aid of his horse, drags the Deathcoaster inside the cave. He sets the horse free. ASH YAHH!! It gallops off. 628 INT. CAVE - DAY 628 ASH Places a black powder charge at the mouth of the cave. He ignites the fuse and climbs into the car. ASH (V.O.) I locked the door. 629 INT. MOUTH OF THE CAVE 629 BOOM! The powder charge blows. The cave's entrance is sealed shut with an avalanche of rock. 630 INT. CAVE - DEATHCOASTER 630 The car headlights come on, piercing the blackness. 631 INT. DEATHCOASTER 631 ASH uncorks the flask filled with the Wiseman's brew. ASH (V.O.) I closed my eyes. He lets six drops fall into his mouth. One for each century he must sleep. ASH (V.O.) I took a drink. Ash is unaware that an extra drop has fallen into his mouth! A 7th drop! Ash swallows the liquid. ASH (V.O.) I didn't know if it was day or night. I started... to get drowsy... And I slept... 632 ASH 632 falls into a deep slumber. DISSOLVE TO: 633 THE DEATHCOASTER'S HEADLIGHTS 633 fade. DISSOLVE TO: 634 CLOSER ON ASH'S SLEEPING FACE 634 now in a different position. Time has passed. He needs a shave. ASH ...And dreamed. 635 THE HANDS ON ASH'S WRISTWATCH 635 wind faster and faster, then halt and rust in time lapse photography. The leather band rots away and the watch falls from Ash's wrist. 636 THE SUN 636 rises then sets. 637 THE MOON 637 follows. 638 A CRACK 638 forms along the surface of the aging rock wall. ASH (V.O.) Dreams last lasted centuries. 639 A BARREN TREE 639 sprouts buds, they swell forming leaves which change to the brilliant colors of fall then drop. 640 A FROST 640 covers Ash. 641 ICICLES 641 on the ceiling of the cave melt. The water drops down onto Ash's face. He stirs. 642 ASH 642 awakens in a heap of rusted scrap, which was once the Deathcoaster. His clothes and armor having deteriorated, he is buck ass naked as he staggers to the mouth of the cave. He digs at the rocks that block the cave's entrance. Sunlight streams into the hole he has created. 643 EXT. HILLSIDE 643 ASH climbs from the cave and steps into the sunlight. ASH (V.O.) And when I awoke... 644 ASH 644 beholds... 645 A FUTURISTIC CITY - 645 after the next Nuclear war: a dead land. 646 ASH'S P.O.V. 646 A FRACTURED CLOCK TOWER lays sprawled on its side. The time of mankind's death frozen on the cracked face of the clock. 647 A SHATTERED BRIDGE 647 abruptly ends, a third of the way across a river it once spanned. Upon it, rest heaps of futuristic, yet rusted taxicabs piled eight deep in some places. CAMERA PULLS BACK from a stunned Ash, amidst the atomized pieces of IrON and bone. ASH ....I found that I had slept too long. 648 ASH 648 is so small a dot now, and so far away, that we almost can't hear his terrified SCREAM! CUT TO BLACK. - 19:28:03 on 26 Nov 98 GMT

glamour:Quine's logical armamentarium is unrivalled, and he deploys it on behalf of some of the most peculiar notions one could hope to run across, such as the infamous Quine-Duhem thesis (that no theory can ever be refuted). This tendency has led Dennett to coin the verb ``to quine'', meaning ``to deny a distinction others feel to be obvious.'' Quite unfairly, he supplements his logical artillery with rhetorical sappers, in the form of one of the most elegant prose styles ever to flow from the pen of an American author; he could be a character in Jack Vance. He calls to mind excruciatingly formal suppers from ages now past when the fish-knife was de rigueur and where a scandalized hush would greet any lapse of punctillio. Or rather, one of the exceedingly refined diners at those suppers, for whom the proper use of the fish-knife is automatic, second nature and almost first; for one of the qualities of Quine's writing is that he makes everything, not least his minute clarity and precision, seem easy, obvious and spontaneous. (Try doing this talking about anything in the world, never mind the concept of '``ordered pair'''.) - 16:04:46 on 27 Nov 98 GMT

We were never able to find a top which was cute, small and easy to use which we could sell at a reasonable price. Finally, we found one, the Little Friends Spinning Top! For ages 1 to 2 years old the Little Friends Spinning Top is kid powered (no batteries) and very easy to use. As it spins it makes a gentle chiming sound. Children are stimulated by its sounds, rotating action, and bright cheerful colors. Children learn action/reaction from toys such as tops, and this toy also helps develop gross motor skills. Farmer Vincent:In a heavy saucepan or fryer, heat 2 inches of oil to 375 degrees. Grate the sweet potatoes into medium-sized bowl, cover them with boiling water and let them stand for 15 minutes. Drain off the water and slowly add the flour, egg, salt and pepper, stirring to make sure that they are well mixed. You should have a th ickish paste that will hold its shape when picked up in a tablespoon. If the mixture is too thick, add a bit of warm water. If it is too thin, add a bit more flour. Drop the mixture, a few tablespoons at a time, into the hot oil and cook the fritters for 3 to 5 minutes, or until they float to the surface, turning them once to make sure that they are slightly browned on each side. redcap: FOR the most wild, yet most homely narrative which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit belief. Mad indeed would I be to expect it, in a case where my very senses reject their own evidence. Yet, mad am I not --and very surely do I not dream. But to-morrow I die, and to-day I would unburthen my soul. My immediate purpose is to place before the world, plainly, succinctly, and without comment, a series of mere household events. In their consequences, these events have terrified --have tortured --have destroyed me. Yet I will not attempt to expound them. To me, they have presented little but Horror --to many they will seem less terrible than baroques. Hereafter, perhaps, some intellect may be found which will reduce my phantasm to the common-place --some intellect more calm, more logical, and far less excitable than my own, which will perceive, in the circumstances I detail with awe, nothing more than an ordinary succession of very natural causes and effects. From my infancy I was noted for the docility and humanity of my disposition. My tenderness of heart was even so conspicuous as to make me the jest of my companions. I was especially fond of animals, and was indulged by my parents with a great variety of pets. With these I spent most of my time, and never was so happy as when feeding and caressing them. This peculiar of character grew with my growth, and in my manhood, I derived from it one of my principal sources of pleasure. To those who have cherished an affection for a faithful and sagacious dog, I need hardly be at the trouble of explaining the nature or the intensity of the gratification thus derivable. There is something in the unselfish and self-sacrificing love of a brute, which goes directly to the heart of him who has had frequent occasion to test the paltry friendship and gossamer fidelity of mere Man. I married early, and was happy to find in my wife a disposition not uncongenial with my own. Observing my partiality for domestic pets, she lost no opportunity of procuring those of the most agreeable kind. We had birds, gold fish, a fine dog, rabbits, a small monkey, and a cat. This latter was a remarkably large and beautiful animal, entirely black, and sagacious to an astonishing degree. In speaking of his intelligence, my wife, who at heart was not a little tinctured with superstition, made frequent allusion to the ancient popular notion, which regarded all black cats as witches in disguise. Not that she was ever serious upon this point --and I mention the matter at all for no better reason than that it happens, just now, to be remembered. Pluto --this was the cat's name --was my favorite pet and playmate. I alone fed him, and he attended me wherever I went about the house. It was even with difficulty that I could prevent him from following me through the streets. Our friendship lasted, in this manner, for several years, during which my general temperament and character --through the instrumentality of the Fiend Intemperance --had (I blush to confess it) experienced a radical alteration for the worse. I grew, day by day, more moody, more irritable, more regardless of the feelings of others. I suffered myself to use intemperate language to my At length, I even offered her personal violence. My pets, of course, were made to feel the change in my disposition. I not only neglected, but ill-used them. For Pluto, however, I still retained sufficient regard to restrain me from maltreating him, as I made no scruple of maltreating the rabbits, the monkey, or even the dog, when by accident, or through affection, they came in my way. But my disease grew upon me --for what disease is like Alcohol! --and at length even Pluto, who was now becoming old, and consequently somewhat peevish --even Pluto began to experience the effects of my ill temper. One night, returning home, much intoxicated, from one of my haunts about town, I fancied that the cat avoided my presence. I seized him; when, in his fright at my violence, he inflicted a slight wound upon my hand with his teeth. The fury of a demon instantly possessed me. I knew myself no longer. My original soul seemed, at once, to take its flight from my body; and a more than fiendish malevolence, gin-nurtured, thrilled every fibre of my frame. I took from my waistcoat-pocket a pen-knife, opened it, grasped the poor beast by the throat, and deliberately cut one of its eyes from the socket! I blush, I burn, I shudder, while I pen the damnable atrocity. When reason returned with the morning --when I had slept off the fumes of the night's debauch --I experienced a sentiment half of horror, half of remorse, for the crime of which I had been guilty; but it was, at best, a feeble and equivocal feeling, and the soul remained untouched. I again plunged into excess, and soon drowned in wine all memory of the deed. In the meantime the cat slowly recovered. The socket of the lost eye presented, it is true, a frightful appearance, but he no longer appeared to suffer any pain. He went about the house as usual, but, as might be expected, fled in extreme terror at my approach. I had so much of my old heart left, as to be at first grieved by this evident dislike on the part of a creature which had once so loved me. But this feeling soon gave place to irritation. And then came, as if to my final and irrevocable overthrow, the spirit of PERVERSENESS. Of this spirit philosophy takes no account. Yet I am not more sure that my soul lives, than I am that perverseness is one of the primitive impulses of the human heart --one of the indivisible primary faculties, or sentiments, which give direction to the character of Man. Who has not, a hundred times, found himself committing a vile or a silly action, for no other reason than because he knows he should not? Have we not a perpetual inclination, in the teeth of our best judgment, to violate that which is Law, merely because we understand it to be such? This spirit of perverseness, I say, came to my final overthrow. It was this unfathomable longing of the soul to vex itself --to offer violence to its own nature --to do wrong for the wrong's sake only --that urged me to continue and finally to consummate the injury I had inflicted upon the unoffending brute. One morning, in cool blood, I slipped a noose about its neck and hung it to the limb of a tree; --hung it with the tears streaming from my eyes, and with the bitterest remorse at my heart; --hung it because I knew that it had loved me, and because I felt it had given me no reason of offence; --hung it because I knew that in so doing I was committing a sin --a deadly sin that would so jeopardize my immortal soul as to place it --if such a thing were possible --even beyond the reach of the infinite mercy of the Most Merciful and Most Terrible God. On the night of the day on which this cruel deed was done, I was aroused from sleep by the cry of fire. The curtains of my bed were in flames. The whole house was blazing. It was with great difficulty that my wife, a servant, and myself, made our escape from the conflagration. The destruction was complete. My entire worldly wealth was swallowed up, and I resigned myself thenceforward to despair. I am above the weakness of seeking to establish a sequence of cause and effect, between the disaster and the atrocity. But I am detailing a chain of facts --and wish not to leave even a possible link imperfect. On the day succeeding the fire, I visited the ruins. The walls, with one exception, had fallen in. This exception was found in a compartment wall, not very thick, which stood about the middle of the house, and against which had rested the head of my bed. The plastering had here, in great measure, resisted the action of the fire --a fact which I attributed to its having been recently spread. About this wall a dense crowd were collected, and many persons seemed to be examining a particular portion of it with every minute and eager attention. The words "strange!" "singular!" and other similar expressions, excited my curiosity. I approached and saw, as if graven in bas relief upon the white surface, the figure of a gigantic cat. The impression was given with an accuracy truly marvellous. There was a rope about the animal's neck. When I first beheld this apparition --for I could scarcely regard it as less --my wonder and my terror were extreme. But at length reflection came to my aid. The cat, I remembered, had been hung in a garden adjacent to the house. Upon the alarm of fire, this garden had been immediately filled by the crowd --by some one of whom the animal must have been cut from the tree and thrown, through an open window, into my chamber. This had probably been done with the view of arousing me from sleep. The falling of other walls had compressed the victim of my cruelty into the substance of the freshly-spread plaster; the lime of which, had then with the flames, and the ammonia from the carcass, accomplished the portraiture as I saw it. Although I thus readily accounted to my reason, if not altogether to my conscience, for the startling fact 'just detailed, it did not the less fall to make a deep impression upon my fancy. For months I could not rid myself of the phantasm of the cat; and, during this period, there came back into my spirit a half-sentiment that seemed, but was not, remorse. I went so far as to regret the loss of the animal, and to look about me, among the vile haunts which I now habitually frequented, for another pet of the same species, and of somewhat similar appearance, with which to supply its place. One night as I sat, half stupefied, in a den of more than infamy, my attention was suddenly drawn to some black object, reposing upon the head of one of the immense hogsheads of Gin, or of Rum, which constituted the chief furniture of the apartment. I had been looking steadily at the top of this hogshead for some minutes, and what now caused me surprise was the fact that I had not sooner perceived the object thereupon. I approached it, and touched it with my hand. It was a black cat --a very large one --fully as large as Pluto, and closely resembling him in every respect but one. Pluto had not a white hair upon any portion of his body; but this cat had a large, although indefinite splotch of white, covering nearly the whole region of the breast. Upon my touching him, he immediately arose, purred loudly, rubbed against my hand, and appeared delighted with my notice. This, then, was the very creature of which I was in search. I at once offered to purchase it of the landlord; but this person made no claim to it --knew nothing of it --had never seen it before. I continued my caresses, and, when I prepared to go home, the animal evinced a disposition to accompany me. I permitted it to do so; occasionally stooping and patting it as I proceeded. When it reached the house it domesticated itself at once, and became immediately a great favorite with my wife. For my own part, I soon found a dislike to it arising within me. This was just the reverse of what I had anticipated; but I know not how or why it was --its evident fondness for myself rather disgusted and annoyed. By slow degrees, these feelings of disgust and annoyance rose into the bitterness of hatred. I avoided the creature; a certain sense of shame, and the remembrance of my former deed of cruelty, preventing me from physically abusing it. I did not, for some weeks, strike, or otherwise violently ill use it; but gradually --very gradually --I came to look upon it with unutterable loathing, and to flee silently from its odious presence, as from the breath of a pestilence. What added, no doubt, to my hatred of the beast, was the discovery, on the morning after I brought it home, that, like Pluto, it also had been deprived of one of its eyes. This circumstance, however, only endeared it to my wife, who, as I have already said, possessed, in a high degree, that humanity of feeling which had once been my distinguishing trait, and the source of many of my simplest and purest pleasures. With my aversion to this cat, however, its partiality for myself seemed to increase. It followed my footsteps with a pertinacity which it would be difficult to make the reader comprehend. Whenever I sat, it would crouch beneath my chair, or spring upon my knees, covering me with its loathsome caresses. If I arose to walk it would get between my feet and thus nearly throw me down, or, fastening its long and sharp claws in my dress, clamber, in this manner, to my breast. At such times, although I longed to destroy it with a blow, I was yet withheld from so doing, partly it at by a memory of my former crime, but chiefly --let me confess it at once --by absolute dread of the beast. This dread was not exactly a dread of physical evil-and yet I should be at a loss how otherwise to define it. I am almost ashamed to own --yes, even in this felon's cell, I am almost ashamed to own --that the terror and horror with which the animal inspired me, had been heightened by one of the merest chimaeras it would be possible to conceive. My wife had called my attention, more than once, to the character of the mark of white hair, of which I have spoken, and which constituted the sole visible difference between the strange beast and the one I had y si destroyed. The reader will remember that this mark, although large, had been originally very indefinite; but, by slow degrees --degrees nearly imperceptible, and which for a long time my Reason struggled to reject as fanciful --it had, at length, assumed a rigorous distinctness of outline. It was now the representation of an object that I shudder to name --and for this, above all, I loathed, and dreaded, and would have rid myself of the monster had I dared --it was now, I say, the image of a hideous --of a ghastly thing --of the GALLOWS! --oh, mournful and terrible engine of Horror and of Crime --of Agony and of Death! And now was I indeed wretched beyond the wretchedness of mere Humanity. And a brute beast --whose fellow I had contemptuously destroyed --a brute beast to work out for me --for me a man, fashioned in the image of the High God --so much of insufferable wo! Alas! neither by day nor by night knew I the blessing of Rest any more! During the former the creature left me no moment alone; and, in the latter, I started, hourly, from dreams of unutterable fear, to find the hot breath of the thing upon my face, and its vast weight --an incarnate Night-Mare that I had no power to shake off --incumbent eternally upon my heart! Beneath the pressure of torments such as these, the feeble remnant of the good within me succumbed. Evil thoughts became my sole intimates --the darkest and most evil of thoughts. The moodiness of my usual temper increased to hatred of all things and of all mankind; while, from the sudden, frequent, and ungovernable outbursts of a fury to which I now blindly abandoned myself, my uncomplaining wife, alas! was the most usual and the most patient of sufferers. One day she accompanied me, upon some household errand, into the cellar of the old building which our poverty compelled us to inhabit. The cat followed me down the steep stairs, and, nearly throwing me headlong, exasperated me to madness. Uplifting an axe, and forgetting, in my wrath, the childish dread which had hitherto stayed my hand, I aimed a blow at the animal which, of course, would have proved instantly fatal had it descended as I wished. But this blow was arrested by the hand of my wife. Goaded, by the interference, into a rage more than demoniacal, I withdrew my arm from her grasp and buried the axe in her brain. She fell dead upon the spot, without a groan. This hideous murder accomplished, I set myself forthwith, and with entire deliberation, to the task of concealing the body. I knew that I could not remove it from the house, either by day or by night, without the risk of being observed by the neighbors. Many projects entered my mind. At one period I thought of cutting the corpse into minute fragments, and destroying them by fire. At another, I resolved to dig a grave for it in the floor of the cellar. Again, I deliberated about casting it in the well in the yard --about packing it in a box, as if merchandize, with the usual arrangements, and so getting a porter to take it from the house. Finally I hit upon what I considered a far better expedient than either of these. I determined to wall it up in the cellar --as the monks of the middle ages are recorded to have walled up their victims. For a purpose such as this the cellar was well adapted. Its walls were loosely constructed, and had lately been plastered throughout with a rough plaster, which the dampness of the atmosphere had prevented from hardening. Moreover, in one of the walls was a projection, caused by a false chimney, or fireplace, that had been filled up, and made to resemble the rest of the cellar. I made no doubt that I could readily displace the at this point, insert the corpse, and wall the whole up as before, so that no eye could detect anything suspicious. And in this calculation I was not deceived. By means of a crow-bar I easily dislodged the bricks, and, having carefully deposited the body against the inner wall, I propped it in that position, while, with little trouble, I re-laid the whole structure as it originally stood. Having procured mortar, sand, and hair, with every possible precaution, I prepared a plaster could not every poss be distinguished from the old, and with this I very carefully went over the new brick-work. When I had finished, I felt satisfied that all was right. The wall did not present the slightest appearance of having been disturbed. The rubbish on the floor was picked up with the minutest care. I looked around triumphantly, and said to myself --"Here at least, then, my labor has not been in vain." My next step was to look for the beast which had been the cause of so much wretchedness; for I had, at length, firmly resolved to put it to death. Had I been able to meet with it, at the moment, there could have been no doubt of its fate; but it appeared that the crafty animal had been alarmed at the violence of my previous anger, and forebore to present itself in my present mood. It is impossible to describe, or to imagine, the deep, the blissful sense of relief which the absence of the detested creature occasioned in my bosom. It did not make its appearance during the night --and thus for one night at least, since its introduction into the house, I soundly and tranquilly slept; aye, slept even with the burden of murder upon my soul! The second and the third day passed, and still my tormentor came not. Once again I breathed as a free-man. The monster, in terror, had fled the premises forever! I should behold it no more! My happiness was supreme! The guilt of my dark deed disturbed me but little. Some few inquiries had been made, but these had been readily answered. Even a search had been instituted --but of course nothing was to be discovered. I looked upon my future felicity as secured. Upon the fourth day of the assassination, a party of the police came, very unexpectedly, into the house, and proceeded again to make rigorous investigation of the premises. Secure, however, in the inscrutability of my place of concealment, I felt no embarrassment whatever. The officers bade me accompany them in their search. They left no nook or corner unexplored. At length, for the third or fourth time, they descended into the cellar. I quivered not in a muscle. My heart beat calmly as that of one who slumbers in innocence. I walked the cellar from end to end. I folded my arms upon my bosom, and roamed easily to and fro. The police were thoroughly satisfied and prepared to depart. The glee at my heart was too strong to be restrained. I burned to say if but one word, by way of triumph, and to render doubly sure their assurance of my guiltlessness. "Gentlemen," I said at last, as the party ascended the steps, "I delight to have allayed your suspicions. I wish you all health, and a little more courtesy. By the bye, gentlemen, this --this is a very well constructed house." (In the rabid desire to say something easily, I scarcely knew what I uttered at all.) --"I may say an excellently well constructed house. These walls --are you going, gentlemen? --these walls are solidly put together"; and here, through the mere phrenzy of bravado, I rapped heavily, with a cane which I held in my hand, upon that very portion of the brick-work behind which stood the corpse of the wife of my bosom. But may God shield and deliver me from the fangs of the Arch-Fiend! No sooner had the reverberation of my blows sunk into silence than I was answered by a voice from within the tomb! --by a cry, at first muffled and broken, like the sobbing of a child, and then quickly swelling into one long, loud, and continuous scream, utterly anomalous and inhuman --a howl --a wailing shriek, half of horror and half of triumph, such as might have arisen only out of hell, conjointly from the throats of the damned in their agony and of the demons that exult in the damnation. Of my own thoughts it is folly to speak. Swooning, I staggered to the opposite wall. For one instant the party upon the stairs remained motionless, through extremity of terror and of awe. In the next, a dozen stout arms were tolling at the wall. It fell bodily. The corpse, already greatly decayed and clotted with gore, stood erect before the eyes of the spectators. Upon its head, with red extended mouth and solitary eye of fire, sat the hideous beast whose craft had seduced me into murder, and whose informing voice had consigned me to the hangman. I had walled the monster up within the tomb!!! - 22:10:35 on 29 Nov 98 GMT

Like some madman, I had burst from concealment and was running recklessly into the glade, waving my arms and yelling for the druids to stop. I expected lightning to strike me and shrivel me into a cinder ay Menua's command. Instead, he and the others merely stared at me. Aberth's upraised arm hung in the air, holding the knife above Rosmerta. Only the chief druid seemed able to move; he tried to catch me as I flung myself protectively across my grandmother's body. I beat him off with clubbed fists, then took the old woman in my arms. I was surprised to discover how thin she was. It was like holding a bag of sticks. We lay together on the stone of sacrifice with the knife poised above us. I did not look up. I pressed my lips against Rosmerta's cheek, feeling the dry old skin, inhaling her scent, her individual oder of woodsmoke and desiccation. Her flesh was cold to my lips. Menua's hand clamped on my shoulder. "Step aside, lad," he said more kindly than I expected. I intended to obey him; we always obey our druids. But instead my arms tightened around Rosemerta. "I won't let you kill her," I said in a muffled voice, my face against hers. "We aren't going to kill her. She's already dead." Menua waited for his words to sink in. Aberth took a step backward, perhaps in response to some signal from the chief druid. - 1:34:52 on 30 Nov 98 GMT

(S)pammers are all the same:The Druids emerged from the ancient Celtic tribes, at a time when the people had to live close to nature to survive. - 16:56:53 on 30 Nov 98 GMT

Bleeding can sometimes occur without the person noticing it. This type of bleeding is called occult or hidden. Fortunately, simple tests can detect occult blood in the stool.:leech - 17:21:48 on 30 Nov 98 GMT

Carl:RON: I'm clearly unsure and amused by these odd posts, and certainly saddened by the incongruencies they represent as this site, that once had what its objectives were to be. They are as disgusting as those things that graffitti walls and buildings. Snipers would be a good cure for those things, true this is harsh to read, but they disgust me. These odd posts, can they be cured? - 17:54:07 on 30 Nov 98 GMT

Carl:RON: That is true, I think the thing that could arguably be more of a concern than these nonsense posts, are that the former participants let these acts of nonsense disrupt them. Ignoring them is as easy a cure as a sniper. - 18:21:06 on 30 Nov 98 GMT

Steven :ALL <<>> MIMM2 is free of assholes, well maybe not free of assholes, but it is free of mental mastubating jerks such as the type that are spamming this site. If you can stomach a threaded format, you will not longer have to see Spam, WAHOOO! - 19:18:38 on 30 Nov 98 GMT
Adam WHAT'S GNU, CARL?:•••• Have Gnu, Will Ravel •••• Carl, where is this right-to-bear arms discussion? I love good constitutional combat! By the way, god is a moron. - 20:21:26 on 30 Nov 98 GMT

Melissa --> SPAMMER :S(PAM)MER: Does the ( ) have some kind of meaning? You seem to take the time to place them in particular places, inferring a reason for doing so. Also, you take the time to post certain comments previously made over again, and with precision (sort of). I wonder, are you schizophrenic, trying to say something but unable to articulate? Or maybe obsessive-compulsive? I'm not being disrespectful here, I sincerely want to know. The maddening style of your posts very much resembles the seemingly incoherent writings of a schizophrenic. Seemingly incoherent, but possessing a thread (almost undetectable) of sense, a common theme perhaps. - 20:59:37 on 30 Nov 98 GMT
Carl:ADAM: it is a threaded affair at the godless zone. Not a bad group, the problem is the format it is not as free and open as this site. The URL is b-lo. - 21:38:44 on 30 Nov 98 GMT
Carl:ADAM: error, mistake amended. - 21:41:51 on 30 Nov 98 GMT
